What is DevOps? Here’s what it means to us

I like to say “if you speak with a hundred people about DevOps, you’ll get 100 different opinions of what it is”.

For us at Releaseworks, DevOps is first and foremost a way of working. We think that an organisation that is mature in DevOps shares the success of their products and platforms across functional teams.

For us, DevOps as a practice encompasses a set of tools, technologies and methodologies that enable organisations to reach this goal.

You’ll often hear that because of the above, DevOps Engineer shouldn’t be a role title. I disagree: it often makes sense to have a dedicated engineering function to build and promote DevOps tools and technologies in your organisation.

What you cannot expect though, is that a DevOps Engineer on their own can take your organisation from zero to hero in DevOps.

DevOps is not only a technical improvement, it’s also a cultural change.
