In cloud engineering, stability and resilience refer to the consistent and reliable performance of a cloud platform over time. Prioritising stability ensures that the platform is available, functional, and performs well under a variety of conditions.
A resilient platform is defined as one that can continue to operate optimally under greater-than-average load, such as new product launches, new version releases, or increasing capacity when onboarding a new region. Cloud platforms can be designed to achieve a desired level of availability - often ranging from ‘three nines’ (99.9%) up to ‘five nines’ (99.999%).
Some methods of achieving high availability are running across multiple logical cloud locations (‘availability zones’) for redundancy, auto-scaling and self-healing infrastructure, load-balancing, firewalls with dynamic rulesets, automated backup & restore processes and performance optimisation.
Maintaining a stable position in the market
Instability leads to service outages that prevent users from accessing your platform. This can result in loss of revenue and loss of reputation with your customers and diminished market perception. A platform that cannot meet SLA or availability criteria may open the door for paying customers to request refunds, citing impact to their business and loss of earnings.
Instability often means more time spent diagnosing and fixing issues, which can result in massively increased operational costs and a drain on development resources to fix, as the problems go beyond the scope of conventional operational support. In these instances, developers and infrastructure engineers can be temporarily taken off of projects, causing them to slip from schedule.
You may also be in breach of legal compliance duties if your platform is too easily disrupted to be considered secure; making it susceptible to attack, potentially leading to financial penalties and loss of certification.
