How much are you overpaying for cloud?

We know we should be switching the light off when leaving a room. Sometimes we leave it on anyway, because we think we're coming right back. Guess what - that's exactly what developers do with cloud resources!

In a world where it only takes seconds to spin up virtual machines or other cloud resources, you are almost guaranteed to have unused leftover resources. It may be only £10 here and £15 there, but it adds up quickly: we recently saved one of our customers over £45,000 annually with a simple right-sizing exercise.

Here are our five top tips for reducing your cloud spend

  1. Shut down test environments automatically: if your testing and development environments are only used 8 hours a day, why pay for 24?

  2. Set up autoscaling: ensure you only pay for what’s needed, while being able to meet peaks in demand

  3. Right-size your databases: I bet this is the most expensive item on your cloud bill. Are your database instances sized correctly, and configured according to best practices?

  4. Commit to savings plans & reserved instances: if you currently pay on-demand prices, you could save over 70% by committing to 12 - 36 months of usage.

  5. Implement containerisation: Containerising applications with Docker leads to optimal resource utilisation and more resilient platforms.

When was the last time you did a cost optimisation exercise on your cloud platform?
